| Description: | This is a letter from a frustrated George Allen to Clarence Arata of the Washington Board of Trade seeking help in the stalled process of attempting to expand RFK Stadium, the home of the Washington Redskins. The complicated array of government encumbrances produced by doing business in the District has made the proposed expansion of RFK an arduous process. The city government and the Armory Board have approved the expansion, but the financing of it remains an unresolved issue. Allen offers in the letter that the Redskins are willing to bear part of the financial burden if the District government and the Armory Board are willing not to charge rent on the new section until the team has paid off their loan, give to the Redskins the concession money formerly paid to baseball (the Senators had just moved to Texas at the end of 1971), and if the stadium continues to provide the cost and labor in setting up temporary seating. Allen takes a subtle swipe at the District by stating, "Professional sports are vitally important to a community and the cooperation offered major sports in other cities points out a lack of progress here." The Senators leaving for the Dallas/Ft. Worth market is no doubt a fresh wound in D.C.'s civic pride in March 1972 that Allen is exploiting, whether intentional or unintentional. |
